Protest planned at Daniël Meierplein in Amsterdam July 5; further demonstrations and a heightened security presence possible

A protest is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 5, at the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein in Amsterdam at 13:00 (local time), despite a ban on gatherings due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Demonstrators are set to march from Jonas Daniël Meierplein to Rembrandtplein and back. The demonstrations are being held to oppose current government regulations which state that people should remain 1.5m (5ft) apart due to COVID-19.

Context

Similar demonstrations took place in The Hague on June 21 and June 28 resulting in hundreds of arrests. On June 21, police used a water cannon to disperse protesters in the Malieveld area.
