Warning

Event

Berlin authorities announced on Wednesday, August 27, that they have banned an upcoming protest over coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions in an effort to curb the spread of the virus. Authorities made the decision following a recent related protest where demonstrators failed to wear face masks or keep to social distancing rules. Participants of the event were scheduled to gather at the Brandenburg Gate

Previous related protests on August 1, saw approximately 20,000 people march in Berlin.

A heightened security presence is likely in Berlin during the weekend, although it is unclear whether the ban will be enforced.

As of Thursday, August 27, health authorities have confirmed a total of 239,118 COVID-19 cases with 9289 associated deaths in the country. Further spread of the virus is expected in the near term.

Advice

Those in Germany are advised to monitor developments, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
