Al-Shabaab fighters launched an attack on a military base in Gofgudud-Burey, around 30 km (20 miles) west of Baidoa (Bay region) in the early hours of Monday morning, August 17. Explosions and gunfire have been heard in the area and the assailants reportedly entered the base after detonating a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED). Security forces initially retreated from the base during the attack but are reported to have since regained control of the site. However, the number of casualties from the attack is yet to be confirmed.

Further security operations are likely in the area in the coming hours.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large areas of southern and central Somalia and stages frequent attacks across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the UN-backed government.
