Emerging reports indicate that a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) has detonated near Mogadishu's Elite Hotel on Sunday, August 16. Reports also state that heavy gunfire can be heard in the area. There have been no reports of casualties at this time and it is not immediately clear who is responsible for the attack. 

A heightened security presence is likely in the vicinity of the hotel in the immediate term, and clashes between security forces and militants are possible also.
