The Netherlands: Extinction Rebellion protests planned in The Hague and Amsterdam September 1-21

The climate activist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) have announced their intention to stage a campaign of civil disobedience in Amsterdam and The Hague beginning Tuesday, September 1, through September 21. On September 1, demonstrators are set to gather in Het Plein in The Hague at 09:00 (local time). From 18-21 September, demonstrations are scheduled in Amsterdam's Zuidas businesses district. Also on September 18, a large demonstration will reportedly take place in Gustav Mahlerplein.

Demonstrations are to be expected elsewhere in Amsterdam and The Hague and are possible in urban centers nationwide between the above dates. A heightened security forces presence and localized travel disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of the protests.

Context

Extinction Rebellion previously held global demonstrations during the summer of 2019, with protests often leading to significant travel disruption, as well as numerous clashes between protesters and police. Typically, these protests are held with the intention to disrupt travel/operations in a certain area, targeting infrastructure such as overland and underground rail, airports, and government buildings/financial districts.
