Greece: Severe weather forecast in western and southern regions from September 17

Storm system to bring heavy rain and strong winds to western and southern regions from September 17

Warning

Event

Stormy weather is forecast to hit the Ionian Islands and southern Greece from Thursday, September 17, due to the presence of an atmospheric disturbance in the Mediterranean. The disturbance could develop into a rare Mediterranean cyclonic storm, sometimes referred to as a 'Medicane' (an amalgamation of Mediterranean and hurricane). The storm system has been named Ianos by the National Observatory of Athens and will bring thunderstorms from Thursday. Ianos is expected to come ashore over southern Greece on Friday, although the exact trajectory of the storm is still uncertain.

Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rough seas are expected in the Ionian Islands and parts of southern Greece in the coming days, and associated flooding and disruptions to transport are possible.

Advice

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
