Colombia: Indigenous activists demonstrate in Cali October 12

Indigenous activists demonstrate in Cali denouncing violence on October 12; avoid all protests

Warning

Event

Thousands of Colombia's indigenous community demonstrated in Cali (Valle del Cauca department) on Monday, October 12, demanding an end to violence and perceived injustices. Among other demands were calls for the full implementation of the 2016 peace plan which was to end armed resistance by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels who have remained active amid the lucrative drug-trafficking trade. Following the demonstration, the Interior Ministry announced that a delegation will be traveling to the area over the coming days to meet with protesters who demand an end to FARC violence in the southwestern region of the country.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are expected near any demonstration sites, and clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Those in Colombia are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
