Colombia: Indigenous activists protest convoy to travel from Cali to Bogota October 15

Indigenous activists protest convoy to travel from Cali to Bogota October 15; avoid all protests

Warning

Event

Indigenous activists have called for a vehicular protest convoy from Cali (Valle del Cauca department) to Bogota on Thursday, October 15, to demand an end to violence and perceived injustices. Participants will reportedly gather at the municipal demonstrative center at 13:00 (local time) before traveling to Bogota, with the protest convoy expected to pass through Armenia (Quindio department), Ibague (Tolima department) and El Espinal (Tolima department). Among other demands, protesters will call for the full implementation of the 2016 peace plan to end armed resistance by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels who have remained active in the lucrative drug-trafficking trade.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are expected near any demonstration sites, and clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Those in Colombia are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
