Colombia: Nationwide demonstrations and strikes scheduled for October 21 /update 1
Trade unions and political organizations plan demonstrations and associated strikes throughout Colombia on October 21; avoid all demonstrations as a precaution
Event
Members of the National Committee of the Strike (Comité Nacional del Paro), including several workers unions, student groups, and political organizations, have announced plans to hold nationwide demonstrations and associated strikes on Wednesday, October 21, to protest against the government's economic and security policies.
All organizations participating in the event are scheduled to start the 24-hour strike on Wednesday. Organizers of the event have also announced vehicular processions in major cities from the early morning. The largest demonstrations are scheduled to take place in the below locations:
- Bogota: Plaza de Bolivar
- Bogota: Plaza de Toros
- Bogota: Plaza de los Antersanos
- Bogota: Universidad Nacional
- Barranquilla: Estatua del Joe (Intersection Calle 72 with Carrera 46)
- Bucaramanga: Santander Department Governor's Office
- Cali: Plazoleta de San Francisco
- Medellin: Parque de las Luces
The demonstrations are expected to be well attended. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any protest site. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
