Warning

Event

Protesting students clashed with police outside of the parliament building in Athens on Thursday, October 1, following demands that additional staff be hired to support the education system amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Protests initially gathered at Athens University before marching to parliament, where police fired tear gas to disperse them after the demonstrators caused traffic disruptions in the area. The rally is part of nationwide action by hundreds of students across the country which has also resulted in the closure of schools.

Further protests, with possible clashes between demonstrators and police, are possible in the near term.

Advice

Those in Athens are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, and avoid all protests or demonstrations as a precaution.
