Germany: Evacuations and transport disruptions in Frankfurt due to unexploded WWII bomb Dec. 6
Unexploded ordnance disposal operation in Frankfurt, Germany, prompts localized evacuations and transport disruptions Dec. 6.
Event
Authorities in Frankfurt are conducting a disposal operation following the discovery of an unexploded World War II-era bomb in the Gallus area of Frankfurt Dec. 6. The device was discovered during construction work on Kleyerstrasse. Authorities have imposed a 700-meter (2,296-foot) security cordon around the device to facilitate the disposal operation.
Around 13,000 residents have been evacuated, and no traffic is currently permitted within the security cordon. Multiple roads have been closed, including parts of Mainzer Landstrasse; public transport normally routed through the area will be canceled or diverted. Long-distance, regional, and local rail services routed through Frankfurt are also experiencing disruption, including possible delays and cancellations. Increased traffic congestion is possible as drivers seek alternative routes.
Authorities estimate the disposal operation could last until 2000. Residual disruptions are likely beyond this time as security cordons are lifted and traffic flows return to normal.
Advice
Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions; plan alternative routes if necessary.
