Netherlands: Extinction Rebellion protest ongoing at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Dec. 18
Environmental activists are protesting outside Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Netherlands, Dec. 18. Disruptions possible.
Event
The Extinction Rebellion (XR) climate activist group is holding a small protest at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), the morning of Dec. 18, to demand the complete shutdown of the airport over environmental concerns. While only a few dozen activists appear to be participating in the action, precedent suggests XR activists may attempt to block passenger access to the airport or otherwise attempt to peacefully disrupt operations in some fashion. However, flights are currently unaffected.
Police have deployed to monitor the process. Heightened security measures may also prompt airport processing delays. Although violence is unlikely, police could move to clear the airport or any roadblocks, which could prompt clashes with protesters. Although bystanders are unlikely to be targeted, they would face an indirect physical threat near any violence.
Advice
Allow additional time to clear potential disruptions if traveling via AMS Dec. 18. Avoid all demonstrations to mitigate related disruptions and as a routine precaution; do not attempt to cross protest blockades. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of a confrontation.
