Germany: WWII bomb disposal to prompt evacuations and transport disruptions around Hamburg's Saint Pauli area Jan. 27
Unexploded ordnance disposal operation in the Saint Pauli area of Hamburg, Germany, to prompt disruptions Jan. 27. Avoid the area.
Event
Authorities are responding to the discovery of an unexploded World War II-era bomb in Hamburg Jan. 27. The device was discovered during construction on Heiligengeistfeld in the Saint Pauli area of the city. Authorities are imposing an approximate 500-meter (1,640-foot) security cordon around the device to facilitate the disposal operation.
No traffic will be permitted within the security cordon, possibly impacting Budapester Strasse, Feldstrasse, and Glacischaussee, and all businesses and residents will be evacuated. Public transport normally routed through the area may be canceled or diverted; increased traffic congestion is possible in the area as drivers seek alternative routes. Officials have not given a time for when the disposal is expected to conclude.
Advice
Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before travel; plan alternative routes if necessary.
