Netherlands: Protests against COVID-19 measures likely to continue nationwide through end of January

Protests over coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-related restrictions will likely continue in major cities across the Netherlands through at least the end of January. Activists have staged demonstrations in several municipalities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, and The Hague in reaction to a decision by authorities to impose a daily nationwide curfew as part of the nation's effort to curb the spread of the virus.

Any future protests will likely occur with little-to-no advance warning. Sporadic acts of violence or vandalism are possible. Activists have clashed with security forces at previous protests that have taken place, hurling various objects - including Molotov cocktails - at police. Officers have responded with teargas and baton charges. Several hundred demonstrators have been arrested as of the evening of Jan. 25.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy heavy security to monitor future protests and may attempt to disperse larger gatherings. Localized traffic and transport disruptions are likely.
