Armenia: Rival protests taking place in central Yerevan Feb. 26

Event

Activists led by the Homeland Salvation Movement are protesting near the Parliament building in Yerevan Feb. 26. The action is to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in reaction to the signing of an agreement ending the country's conflict with neighboring Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Organizers are also likely to march through the city center. Pro-government supporters are also reportedly planning to gather at Republic Square.

A heavy security contingent has deployed around the Parliament building, which will prompt localized disruptions, particularly on Baghramyan Avenue; security forces will almost certainly respond quickly to any disruptive or unauthorized actions. Clashes are likely between demonstrators and security personnel, as well as between opposing activists. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any violence, they would face a significant threat in the vicinity.
