Colombia: Truckers' unions to stage nationwide protests Feb. 15
Unionized truckers to demonstrate in cities across Colombia, Feb. 15, in response to hike in highway tolls.
Event
Truck drivers associated with several labor organizations, including the Colombian Transport Confederation (Confederacion Colombiana de Transportadores, CCT) and the Association of Cargo Truckers (Asociacion de Transportadores de Carga, ATC), plan to demonstrate nationwide in Colombia on Feb. 15. The purpose of the action is to protest the cost of tolls on the country's highways. Professional truck drivers assert that highway tolls have been increasing at a rate higher than the national inflation index.
Labor leaders have clarified that the Feb. 15 action will include a nationwide strike, and truckers will continue working. However, union members will hold caravan protests in major cities, such as Bogota, Cali, Medellin, and Barranquilla, to demand government action to reduce their costs.
Transport disruptions, including roadblocks, are likely near protest sites Feb. 15. Delays in cargo deliveries are possible. Additional actions could occur if no agreement with the government is reached.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Do not attempt to cross any protester roadblocks; wait for police to clear the way before proceeding. Plan in advance for possible freight delivery disruptions.
