South Africa: Activists rallying in Bloemfontein Feb. 19

A large crowd of activists has gathered in support of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party Secretary-General, Ace Magashule, on Hertzog Plein, Bloemfontein, Feb. 19. Crowds have gathered despite Level-3 COVID-19 regulations prohibiting all political gatherings. Magashule was due at the Magistrate Court, located in proximity to Hetzog Plein, during the morning hours in connection with an ongoing corruption case. The case has since been postponed to Aug. 11.

Heightened security measures will remain in and around the town in the coming days. Clashes between police and demonstrators are possible. Clashes between rival supporters are also possible should gatherings occur. Travel disruptions are possible in the vicinity of Hertzog Plain near the Magistrates court.

Context

Ace Magashule will likely face several corruption-related charges in connection with his alleged role in a ZAR-255 million (USD-15 million) asbestos audit project tender that was awarded by the Free State provincial government during his time as premier. Several businesspeople and former government officials have already been arrested and charged over corruption related to the audit after it was revealed that the money was diverted to several senior ruling party officials instead of being used to remove asbestos from low-cost housing schemes in the province. Magashule's opponents in the ANC-Free State branch have held several anti-corruption protests in recent months.
