Emergency workers responding to several fires in the Cape Winelands District Municipality, South Africa, as of Feb. 27.
Event
Emergency crews are responding to several fires in the Cape Winelands District Municipality as of Feb. 27. The fires, which started in the Franschhoek Valley approximately Feb. 22/23, have since spread considerably and are currently impacting large parts of the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve and surrounding areas, including areas located southeast of Stellenbosch. Officials have not stated when they expect the fire to be contained and have warned that dense vegetation, strong wind, and high temperatures could exacerbate current fire conditions. At least two firefighters have been injured battling the flames. Officials have not announced any evacuation orders as yet but have urged the elderly, frail, those with comorbidities such as asthma, and young children to consider leaving the impact area.
The spread of the fire could result in business and transport disruptions in the affected area over the coming days. Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change. Authorities could close routes within the wildfire complex due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. Traffic flows could also be disrupted during re-entry periods. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region. Power outages are also possible.
Advice
Heed the instructions of the authorities. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals in the area should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged power outages.
