Authorities have issued wildfire warnings for parts of the Northern Cape, South Africa, through at least Feb. 15.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued level 10 (the highest level) warnings for wildfire conditions in the Northern Cape Province, Feb. 15. The area covers Upington and surrounds and areas immediately west of Kimberely. The SAWS indicates that the likelihood of fires is high and the potential impact severe. Fires could spread rapidly and cause damage to property and loss of life. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.
Any fires that occur could lead to ground travel disruptions, including to national highways, and power outages in the impacted area. Authorities could close both primary or secondary routes during any fire response. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion.
