Demonstrators have clashed with security forces during a protest near the Police Department of the Nea Smyrni neighborhood of Athens, the evening of March 7. More than 10000 demonstrators had gathered to condemn what they viewed as an incident of police brutality that occurred in the neighborhood the afternoon of March 7. Police used teargas and flash bombs to disperse the crowd. Demonstrators responded by hurling objects at security forces.
Police will remain deployed in large numbers in the Nea Smyrni area through at least early March 8. Traffic disruptions are likely. Related spontaneous demonstrations are possible in other areas of Athens, as well as other major cities including Thessaloniki, and Larissa. Clashes are possible at any demonstrations that materialize, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse protesters.
