Authorities in South Africa have declared a provincial mourning period in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa, through March 19 following the death of the Zulu monarch, King Goodwill Zwelithini. Provincial authorities have stated that all government and private functions would be suspended for a day of prayer March 18. Reports have indicated that the king will be buried during a private ceremony the evening of March 18 at the Zulu Royal Palace in Nongoma, KZN. Several politicians and dignitaries are likely to be traveling to the palace to pay their respects. Previous reports indicated that the king would lie in state; however, due to COVID-19 threats, this has been canceled. Additional official and unofficial commemorative gatherings are possible across the province in the coming days.

Heightened security is likely near official events. Disruptions on routes to and from Nongoma and other events are likely. Some business and government operations may temporarily suspend operations during official mourning periods or funeral events.
