Student protesters marching from Luthuli House towards Constitutional Court, Johannesburg, South Africa, March 11. Police deployed.

Warning

Event

Students from the University of the Witwatersrand continue protesting in Johannesburg March 11 in response to a passerby's death during protests March 10 and the financial exclusion of students in the new academic year. Protesters are marching towards the Constitutional court after gathering outside the African National Congress (ANC) headquarters, Luthuli House, where students handed over a memorandum demanding free education. Large crowds and an increased security presence have been reported. There have been no reports of violence thus far.

Further protests cannot be discounted. Transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of incidents. Violence is also possible, especially if protesters block roads or refuse police orders to disperse.

Advice

Monitor local media for updates on the protest action. If possible, avoid the protest as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check local traffic conditions for disruptions and allow extra time to reach destinations in the protest area March 11.
