Colombia: Commemorative marches planned in multiple cities, Aug. 7
Marches and demonstrations to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Boyaca are planned in multiple cities in Colombia, Aug. 7.
Event
Marches commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of Boyaca are planned in urban centers across Colombia Aug. 7. Participants are likely to gather around the Puente de Boyaca, located on the Bogota-Tunja highway, and the Pantano de Vargas monument in Paipa, Boyaca department. Large anti-government protests coinciding with the commemorative date are possible along major roads, outside government buildings, and in major city squares nationwide, Aug. 7.
The National Police have increased security measures in multiple cities, including Bogota, Cali, Medellin, Popayan, Neiva, Pereira, Pasto, Manizales, Bucaramanga, Cucuta, and Barranquilla, and will monitor any commemorative gatherings and potential anti-government protests.
Transport disruptions are likely near demonstration sites and authorities have set up dozens of checkpoints nationwide. Clashes are possible if police move to disperse protesters forcefully. Police and military personnel could deploy water cannon and tear gas to disperse demonstrators. The use of live ammunition cannot be ruled out in protests. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any violence, they would face a significant indirect threat. Given precedent in recent protests and demonstrations, the threat from violence, vandalism, and looting will be elevated after dark.
Advice
Avoid all large gatherings and protests as a precaution. Do not attempt to cross any protester roadblocks; allow police to clear them before proceeding. Monitor local media for updates on the status of roads, as protest locations may not be announced in advance. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
