Informational

Event

Activists, some of whom are affiliated with the Liberation Movement group, are calling for a demonstration in Yerevan Nov. 22. Participants will gather in Republic Square around 17:00. Organizers are denouncing a potential border demarcation agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The demonstration is likely to be well attended. Additionally, large groups of participants may break away from the main demonstration to protest outside nearby government buildings. Related protests took place on several major thoroughfares in Yerevan early on Nov. 22, prompting police to briefly close roads; at least 18 protesters were arrested.

Large numbers of people and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely result in localized transport disruptions through the early evening; public transport in the area may be canceled or diverted. Further arrests and low-level scuffles cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any violence, they would face an indirect threat of physical harm.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the affected area Nov. 22.
