US: Tornado watch in effect for parts of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina until at least 05:00 EST Dec. 30

Event

The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for parts of central Alabama, northern Georgia, far western North Carolina, and far western South Carolina until at least 05:00 EST Dec. 30. Damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning, heavy rain, and flash flooding are possible in the region, regardless of whether tornadoes reach the ground. Authorities could extend or expand the weather advisory at short notice.

Localized transport and utility disruptions are possible in areas under the tornado watch; strong straight-line winds may pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Driving conditions may be difficult on rural routes and regional highways.

Exercise caution in the affected area. Monitor local media for weather updates. Be prepared to quickly move to a safe location if authorities issue a tornado warning for your location. Postpone nonessential driving until weather conditions improve. Charge battery-powered devices in case prolonged electricity outages occur.
