Benin: Suspected militants attack security post Feb. 8
Suspected militants attack security post in W National Park, Alibori Department, Benin, Feb. 8; six killed, several injured.
Event
A group of unidentified armed assailants reportedly attacked a security post in W National Park in Alibori Department during the afternoon hours of Feb. 8, authorities announced Feb. 9. Authorities additionally stated that the attackers were likely militants; the attack left six Beninese dead and at least 10 more injured.
Authorities have reinforced the security presence in the area. Additional clashes between security forces and militants are possible in the coming days.
Context
Benin has largely avoided the spillover of militant activity from neighboring Burkina Faso in recent years. However, as groups aligned with Al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS) continue to make gains in Burkina Faso and elsewhere, further militant encroachment southward into coastal West Africa, including Benin, Togo, Cote d'Ivoire, and Ghana, remains increasingly likely. Indeed, Benin has experienced an uptick in attacks, with at least three occurring in recent months. The deadly raids have spurred Beninese authorities to devote more security resources to its northernmost regions.
