Russia: Further anti-war protests possible in cities nationwide following Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine

Anti-war rallies possible in cities across Russia through at least the end of February to protest Ukraine conflict.

Warning

Event

Further protests are possible in urban centers across Russia over the coming days in reaction to the country's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Activists staged demonstrations in at least 38 cities nationwide to protest the conflict in Ukraine Feb. 24. Authorities reportedly arrested hundreds of anti-war demonstrators, including some who were protesting individually. Gatherings were larger in major cities, including Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, and Novosibirsk; in Moscow, police detained multiple protesters attempting to gather near Pushkin Square. Russian authorities have warned of legal consequences for those participating in unauthorized demonstrations. Future demonstrations are most likely to occur near prominent public squares, major transport hubs, and government buildings. It remains unclear how many participants such gatherings may draw.

Russian security forces have a history of forcefully dispersing even peaceful anti-government gatherings, as well as arresting participants and occasionally detaining journalists attempting to report on such events. Traffic and business disruptions are likely near all protest sites.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
