Protests in response to the conflict in Ukraine are likely to persist in major cities nationwide through early March. Protests against the conflict have been reported in multiple cities, including Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Moscow, and Novosibirsk, since Feb. 24. Officials have arrested dozens of demonstrators. Protests could attract dozens to hundreds of people.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor and manage gatherings and will likely seek to disperse unruly or unauthorized gatherings. Mass arrests may occur. Demonstrations are most likely to occur near prominent public squares, major transport hubs, and government buildings. Ground travel disruptions are likely near all protest locations. Counterprotests by supporters of the Russian military, President Vladimir Putin, and the Russian state may also occur. Clashes between opposing protest groups remains possible. Demonstrations could escalate in response to conflict developments in Ukraine or political events in Russia.
