Somalia: Bomb explosion in Kismayo, Feb. 22

Event

A bomb explosion was reported in Kismayo, Lower Juba, Feb. 22. Reports indicate the bomb was planted on the car of a renowned Islamic cleric, killing him. Further casualties are possible. There have been no claims of responsibility and the motive for the attack is unclear; however, the Al-Shabaab militant group is the most likely perpetrator. The incident happened amid ongoing parliamentary elections.

Heightened security is almost certain in the impacted area and near prominent government buildings in the coming hours. The emergency response and incident could result in localized ground travel and business disruptions. Officials may also implement additional movement restrictive measures in response to the incident, such as road closures or curfews.
