Benin: Further protests denouncing cost of living likely nationwide through at least mid-March

Further protests denouncing cost of living likely across Benin, through at least mid-March following demonstration Cotonou Feb. 28.

Informational

Event

Further protests denouncing the rising cost of living are likely nationwide through at least mid-March. Thousands gathered in Cotonou on Feb. 18, Feb. 25, and Feb. 28 after several unions, including the National Union of the Unions of the Workers of Benin (UNSTB), had called for protests. Organizers have threatened further actions over the coming days should the government fail to address grievances. Demonstrations are possible in urban centers. A popular gathering point is the Bourse du Travail in Cotonou; participants tend to gather around 08:00.

An increased security presence and localized travel disruptions are likely near all protest sites and along potential march routes. Clashes with security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests to mitigate potential disruptions. Heed the advice of security personnel and leave the area immediately at the first sign of any confrontation.
