Armenia: Anti-government protests likely in Yerevan through at least May 1 /update 1

Anti-government protests likely in Yerevan, Armenia, through at least May 1; heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Anti-government protests are likely in Yerevan through at least May 1 to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Related demonstrations have been held in the capital in recent days after Pashinyan reportedly intimated that he may be willing to make concessions to Azerbaijan vis-a-vis the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory. Activists have pledged to hold related rallies over the coming days, culminating in a main opposition rally in Yerevan May 1.

While organizers did not immediately release details regarding the planned times and locations of most of the upcoming demonstrations in Yerevan, likely rally points include Freedom Square and the Garegin Nzhdeh monument. Groups from multiple other areas are also likely to participate in the main May 1 demonstration; notably, activists are scheduled to march from Sardarapat and Bash-Aparan to Yerevan.

Additional demonstrations may be held in other cities and towns across Armenia over the coming days. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely around any related protest. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations. If violence breaks out, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
