Bangladesh: Tightened security likely nationwide for Bangla New Year April 14

Enhanced security is likely nationwide, especially in Dhaka, for Bangla New Year April 14. Transport disruptions are likely.

Informational

Event

Authorities will likely tighten security nationwide for the Bangla New Year April 14. The main celebration will occur in Dhaka’s Ramna Park until 14:00 on the day; smaller events are likely in other major cities and towns. Transport disruptions are possible near commemorative gatherings. Communal clashes may also occur, as Islamist hardliners have exhorted the largely Muslim population of Bangladesh to avoid the festivities which they claim are a Hindu practice.

Officials have increased security at and near Ramna Park as a precaution to prevent militant attacks. An Islamist extremist group attacked the Dhaka celebration in 2001. Although officials have not publicized any specific threat to the event, authorities are on alert due to potential militant activity by known extremist groups in the locality. Authorities will set up checkpoints in the area and will ban transport operations in the area. Police will also cordon off roadways around Ramna Park and nearby Dhaka University. Similar measures are possible at other venues across the country where events are planned.

Advice

Exercise caution around celebration venues. Plan for travel delays near large events, especially in Dhaka. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
