Bombing targets military convoy in Pendjari National Park, northern Benin, April 11. Five killed and one injured.

Informational

Event

A bomb attack targeted a Beninese military convoy in Pendjari National Park near the border with Burkina Faso April 11. At least five soldiers were killed and another injured in the incident. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the incident.

In response to the attack, heightened security is almost certain in the impacted area. Officials could implement movement restrictive measures, including curfews and road closures in the area in response to the violence. Further attacks are also likely and could include bombings or clashes.

Context

As groups aligned with Al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS) continue to make gains in Burkina Faso and elsewhere, further militant encroachment southward into coastal West Africa, including Benin, Togo, Cote d'Ivoire, and Ghana, remains increasingly likely. Indeed, Benin has experienced an uptick in attacks, with at least five occurring in recent months. The deadly raids have spurred Beninese authorities to devote more security resources to its northernmost regions.

Advice
