Norway: Authorities issue avalanche warnings across multiple regions April 11

Authorities issue warnings for high risk of avalanches across parts of Norway April 11; disruptions to overland transport possible.

Informational

Event

The Norwegian avalanche warning service Varsom has issued red-level avalanche warnings (the second-highest level on a five-tier scale) across parts of central Norway effective April 11. Orange warnings are in place across many other regions of the country for both April 11 and April 12. The heightened avalanche threat is due to wet snow and loose snowpack. Several avalanches have occurred across Norway in recent weeks, including an avalanche in Lyngen Municipality in Finnmark County April 7 that led to three fatalities.

As of April 11, Varsom has issued the following avalanche warnings across mainland Norway:

  • Red warnings: North and south Trondelag County.

  • Orange warnings: Finnmarkskysten, Vest-Finnmark, Nord-Troms, Lyngen, Tromso, Sor-Troms, Indre Troms, Salten, Svartisen, Helgeland, Trollheimen, Romsdal, Sunnmore, Indre Fjordane, Jotunheimen, Indre Sogn, Voss, Hallingdal, and Hardanger avalanche forecast regions.

  • Yellow warnings: Lofoten og Vesterlaen, Ofoten, Vest-Telemark, and Heinae Avalache forecast regions.

Avalanches could block roads and railway tracks and cause damage to nearby infrastructure with little warning. Power outages could occur in affected areas due to damage to power lines or other electricity supply infrastructure. Due to the heightened avalanche risk, authorities may close some mountain passes and other routes near unstable slopes as a precaution.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
