Argentina: Civil society groups to stage protest march in Buenos Aires May 5

Activists to stage protest march in Buenos Aires, Argentina, May 5; increased police presence, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Several civil society groups and labor organizations, including the Central Workers' Union of Argentina (CTA), plan to stage a protest march in central Buenos Aires on May 5. The purpose of the action is to demand judicial reform. Participants assemble at the intersection of Tucuman and Cerrito starting at 16:00 before marching to the National Palace of Justice, which houses the Supreme Court and several lower courts.

While the action will likely remain largely peaceful, police will almost certainly deploy in large numbers to monitor the event. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible during the demonstration.

Advice

Avoid the announced protest as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-government building. Do not attempt to drive through protester roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the National Palace of Justice and along the march route. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
