Armenia: Anti-government protests are likely in Yerevan through May /update 2

Opposition activists will continue to stage regular anti-government protests in Yerevan through at least early May. Activists are calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for his handling of ongoing peace negotiations with Azerbaijan relating to the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory. Protests have increased in recent weeks after Pashinyan reportedly intimated that he may be willing to cede additional territory to Azerbaijan.

The opposition "Hayastan Bloc" has called for daily protests over the issue. A large protest is currently being held in Yerevan on May 10, with activists marching from four directions to converge in the city center and block traffic; the action will culminate in a final rally at France Square at 19:00. Likely locations for future protests include Freedom Square, France Square, and the Garegin Nzhdeh monument.

Additional demonstrations could take place in other cities and towns across Armenia. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely around any protests that may materialize. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out at any demonstrations. Police may arrest disobedient activists and could resort to riot control measures, such as tear gas and water cannon, against unruly crowds; bystanders are unlikely to be directly targeted in any violence but would face an indirect threat of harm.
