Armenia: Opposition activist continue to call for daily protests in Yerevan as of May 19 /update 3
Anti-government protests likely in Yerevan, Armenia, through May; heightened security, transport disruptions, and sporadic clashes likely.
Event
Opposition activists will likely continue to stage regular anti-government protests in Yerevan through at least late May. Activists are calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for his handling of ongoing peace negotiations with Azerbaijan relating to the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory. Protests have increased in recent weeks after Pashinyan reportedly intimated that he might be willing to cede additional territory to Azerbaijan.
The opposition "Hayastan Bloc" has called for daily protests over the issue. A large protest is planned from 19:00 May 19. Opposition activists will gather at multiple locations in Yerevan, including Garegin Nzhdehi Square, Arabkir Surb Khach Church on Komitis Avenue, Sasuntsi Davit Square, the intersection of Leningradyan and Sebastia streets, and France Square. Participants typically march through the area and attempt to blockade roads, as well as entrances to Metro stations and access to individual Metro trains. Likely locations for future protests include Freedom Square, France Square, Republic Square, and Garegin Nzhdehi Square. Protests in the early morning tend to focus on transport hubs, including bus and Metro stations, in a likely effort to maximize disruptions.
Additional demonstrations could take place in other cities and towns across Armenia. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely around any potential protests. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out at any demonstrations. Police may arrest disobedient activists and could resort to riot-control measures, such as tear gas and water cannon, against unruly crowds; bystanders are unlikely to be directly targeted in any violence but would face an indirect threat of harm.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations. If violence breaks out, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure location. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
