Authorities will ease COVID-19-related international travel restrictions from June 1; some domestic measures remain in effect.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Germany will ease COVID-19-related international entry restrictions from June 1. Travelers will no longer be required to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination, recovery, or testing.

Domestic Measures
While most federal-level restrictions have been rescinded, individuals are still required to adhere to some basic protective measures, including wearing a facemask and maintaining social distancing. Wearing a facemask is required in some indoor public spaces, including retail stores, public transport, and healthcare facilities. German states and private companies may require adherence to stricter measures than those enforced at the federal level.

Those who test positive for COVID-19 using a Point of Care (PoC) antigen test are required to take a PCR test immediately and enter self-isolation. Close contacts of individuals testing positive are also required to enter self-isolation, though fully vaccinated persons may be exempt. Individuals must remain in isolation until receipt of a negative PCR test result or for 14 days, whichever comes first; alternatively, individuals may exit quarantine upon clearance from their local health office.

International Travel Restrictions
Effective June 1, most COVID-19-related international entry restrictions will be lifted; travelers will no longer be required to present proof of their vaccination status, recovery from COVID-19, or a recent COVID-19 test result unless they are traveling to Germany from a virus variant area. No countries are currently designated as virus variant areas.

Up until June 1, the following restrictions remain in place: travelers aged 12 and older arriving in Germany must provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19, proof of recovery, or a negative result from either a PCR test taken no more than 48 hours before departure or a rapid antigen test or other test taken no more than 48 hours before arrival; truck drivers and other transport workers are generally exempt from these requirements.

Germany prohibits the entry of unvaccinated individuals from outside the EU, except for those from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. Fully vaccinated travelers from other countries can enter Germany for nonessential purposes, provided they have received their final dose of COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before travel. Only travelers inoculated with vaccines approved by German authorities are allowed entry; for a full list of approved vaccines, click here.

As of May 31, no countries are classified as high-risk or virus-variant areas.

Authorities could ease, tighten, or otherwise amend restrictions with little-to-no notice based on disease activity over the coming weeks.
