Mexico: Adverse weather forecast across northern and northeastern regions through at least May 5

Severe weather forecast across northern and northeastern Mexico through at least May 5. Possible dust storms and tornado activity.

Informational

Event

A frontal system is forecast to cause showers, strong winds, thunderstorms, and possible hail storms across parts of northern and northeastern Mexico through at least May 5. The weather conditions will also likely lead to dust storms developing across parts of the affected area, with the possibility of tornadoes forming near the US border.

Showers, thunderstorms, and possible hail storms are most likely in parts of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas states, with tornado activity possible in northern parts of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. Wind gusts of 50-80 kph (31-50 mph) may be accompanied by dust storms across parts of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas states.

Hazardous Conditions
The active weather system could produce rounds of heavy precipitation, strong winds, and isolated thunderstorm activity across parts of northern and northeastern Mexico in the coming days. Heavy rainfall could trigger flash and areal flooding in some areas. Such flooding is possible in low-lying communities near watercourses and other large bodies of water and in urban areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream of large reservoirs may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Significant rainfall may be preceded by moderate winds and dust storms, though some areas - particularly desert areas - may experience high levels of dust without rain. Power outages could occur throughout the affected areas.

Transport
The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at airports across affected region.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Plan accordingly for potential delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Confirm flights. Review contingency plans and be prepared to move quickly to shelter if tornado warnings are issued. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
