Activists protesting in central Buenos Aires, Argentina, June 1. Localized transport disruptions occurring.

Informational

Event

Activists affiliated with several organizations, including Barrios de Pie, have launched a protest in downtown Buenos Aires on June 1. The purpose of the action is to demand financial assistance for public catering facilities that help feed those in financial need. Demonstrators have blocked roads near the city's Obelisk monument at Plaza de la Republica, causing traffic disruptions in the surrounding area, including along Avenida 9 de Julio.

While the action has remained largely peaceful, there will probably be an increased police presence near the rally site. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely over the coming hours.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-government building. Seek alternate routes. Do not attempt to drive through protester roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them instead before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential protest locations. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
