Armenia: Opposition protests likely in Yerevan and occasionally nationwide through mid-June /update 5

Opposition activists will likely continue to demonstrate through at least mid-June to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan over to his handling of ongoing peace negotiations with Azerbaijan relating to the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory. While most of the demonstrations have taken place in Yerevan, opposition leaders have occasionally called for nationwide protests. Major protests are planned in Yerevan June 8-9. Opposition activists will gather in France Square from 20:00 June 8 and from 19:30 June 9.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to all significant gatherings. Precedent suggests additional demonstrations are likely throughout Yerevan June 8-9, as well as at any other time. Likely protest locations include prominent government buildings and central squares in Yerevan, as well as city centers and major routes nationwide. In Yerevan, protesters will probably continue to gather in or near Freedom Square, France Square, Republic Square, and Garegin Nzhdehi Square. Participants typically march through city streets and have attempted to blockade roads, as well as entrances to Metro stations and access to individual Metro trains. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out. Police may arrest unruly activists and could resort to riot-control measures, such as tear gas and water cannon.
