Germany: Adverse weather forecast across far southern regions through at least June 9

Continuous heavy rainfall forecast across parts of far southern Germany through June 9. Possible flooding and disruptions.

Informational

Event

Continuous heavy rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms is forecast across Alpine areas of southern Bavaria and into far southeastern Baden-Wurttemberg states through at least June 9. As of June 8, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued orange continuous rainfall warnings (the second-highest level on a four-tier scale) across the affected area. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days. Rainfall totals of 3-5 cm (1-2 inches) are possible in the warning areas.

Hazardous Conditions
Heavy rainfall could trigger flash and areal flooding in parts of the affected area. Such flooding is possible in low-lying communities near watercourses and other large bodies of water, as well as in urban areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream of large reservoirs may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.

Transport
Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are likely in areas that see heavy rainfall and potential track inundation.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Plan accordingly for potential delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
