Adverse weather is forecast across much of Greece through at least June 19. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast across western and central regions June 15, with further periods of wet and stormy weather forecast across much of mainland Greece over the coming days. A summer storm struck parts of northern and central Greece June 14, causing flooding and disruptions in affected areas.
As of June 15, authorities have issued the following weather warnings across Greece:
Orange thunderstorm warnings (the middle level on a three-tier scale): West Peloponnese and West Sterea regions.
Yellow heavy rainfall warnings: East and West Peloponnese, East Sterea and Evia, Epirus, Ionion Islands, and Thessaly regions.
Yellow thunderstorm warnings: East Peoloponese, East Sterea and Evia, Epirus, Thessaly, and Thrace regions.
Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.
Heavy downpours in Thessaloniki June 14 caused flooding on many roads across the city and damaged several vehicles. Some homes were flooded and strong winds felled trees in parts of the city. Rainfall amounts of 4-4.5 cm (1.6-1.8 inches) fell in a two-hour period in some areas, with west and central areas of the city most affected. Stormy conditions brought heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail, and lightning to other parts of the country June 14, including the Glyfada, Ilioupoli, Pagrati, Plaka, and Zografou areas of Athens.
Hazardous Conditions
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall.
Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.
Transport
The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at airports in affected areas. Authorities may temporarily suspend port operations or close beach fronts if strong winds trigger hazardous sea conditions.
