Informational

Event

Pro-democracy activists may stage demonstrations in some cities across Thailand July 28 to mark the birthday of King Vajiralongkorn and call for reforms to the constitutional monarchy. The groups will probably also denounce the current government's alleged undemocratic policies, such as a non-profit organization regulations bill that will allegedly affect the groups' independence. Activists have reportedly called for people to wear black as a form of protest July 28. Possible demonstration sites in Bangkok include the Grand Royal Palace, government buildings like Government House, and popular gathering venues like the Democracy Monument and Pathum Wan, Ratchaprasong, and Sam Yan intersections. Disruptive rallies may also occur in other urban centers nationwide, such as Chiang Mai. Royalists and pro-government organizations could stage counterprotests nearby pro-democracy events. Hundreds to thousands of people have participated in pro-democracy and royalist gatherings in Bangkok and other cities nationwide, and similar numbers may join any rallies that occur July 28.

Authorities will likely heighten security at any gathering venues. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible nearby any rallies, especially for gatherings in urban centers or if demonstrators occupy nearby roads. Officials may close train stations in anticipation of large demonstrations. Confrontations between opposing groups of activists or between the police and demonstrators are possible. Mass arrests may occur if security forces deem any activist to violate COVID-19 restrictions; lese majeste laws, which ban insults against the monarchy; or public gathering permit requirements.

Advice

Avoid any protests July 28 due to possible clashes. If any violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Plan for possible localized transport and business disruptions during any demonstrations. Allow additional time for travel and use alternative routes to circumvent rally sites. Remain cooperative if stopped by officials for security checks. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
