Armenia: Sporadic security alerts likely to continue in Armenian urban centers through at least the end of August /update 1

Sporadic bomb threats are likely to continue in Armenian urban centers through at least the end of August.

Informational

Event

A wave of sporadic, anonymous bomb threats has been targeting major urban centers in Armenia in recent weeks; such incidents are likely to continue through at least the remainder of August. Precautionary security force reactions, including evacuations and search operations, will probably prompt short-notice and short-term business and public transport disruption.

Telephoned and emailed threats have been reported against airports, railway stations and metro systems, government offices, shopping centers, and other public sites. Most threats target facilities in the capital, Yerevan, though incidents have also occurred in other major urban centers, including Gyumri. All incidents so far have been determined to be hoaxes.

Context

The motive behind the threats is unknown, and they are possibly being made for a variety of reasons and by a variety of perpetrators. Armenia has a low threat of terrorism and no domestic or international militant groups are known to operate in the country.

Advice

Anticipate short-notice transport and business disruptions. Confirm the status of flights and rail services before checking out of hotels or departing for the airport or train station. Strictly heed the instructions of local security personnel and report any suspicious activity or objects to authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if stopped and questioned by law enforcement officers.
