Brazil: Presidential campaign rally planned in Rio de Janeiro Sept. 8

A political campaign rally is scheduled to place in the Baixada Fluminense area of Rio de Janeiro on Sept 8. Presidential candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva plans to attend the event on Rui Barbosa Square in the Nova Iguacu area. The time for the gathering has not been confirmed. Lula da Silva's rally will take place one day after President Jair Bolsonaro plans to participate in a military parade and demonstration with supporters in Rio de Janeiro to mark Brazil's Independence Day on Sept. 7.

Increased security is likely throughout Rio de Janeiro due to the presence of the presidential candidates Sept. 7-8. Transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of political events due to possible checkpoints, road closures, and other security precautions. Clashes between opposing groups are possible; protesters may also clash with the police if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. The possibility of politically motivated attacks targeting presidential candidates and their supporters cannot be ruled out.
