Dust storms forecast to impact much of the UAE through Aug. 19. Flight disruptions ongoing; further weather-related disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Dust storms currently affecting parts of the UAE are forecast to continue to impact parts of the country through at least Aug. 19. A low-pressure system has been affecting the region since Aug. 14 and is generating strong winds causing blowing dust. Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms may also impact some areas of the country over the coming days.

Reduced visibility due to the dust storms will likely impact air and ground transportation across parts of the country, and some flight disruptions have been reported Aug. 14-15. At least ten inbound flights to Dubai International Airport (DXB) were diverted due to dusty conditions Aug. 14 and further delays have been reported Aug. 15. Airlines are advising passengers to keep up to date with the status of their flights due to possible further disruptions in the coming days. Flights have been operating largely as normal at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) as of Aug. 15; however, visibility of below 500 meters (1,640 feet) is possible in the area Aug. 15 and authorities have stated they are closely monitoring the situation.

The UAE National Center for Meteorology issued orange and yellow dust storm warnings (the middle and lowest levels on a three-tier scale) across most of the country Aug. 15. Red warnings around Dubai and some eastern regions were issued earlier Aug. 15 but have since been downgraded. The center has advised road users to take precautions due to the dust storms and warned of possible airport disruptions. Further dusty conditions are forecast each day through Aug. 19, as well as isolated showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds in some areas. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

Dust storms can reduce visibility, leading to transport disruptions. Hazardous driving conditions are possible and could result in traffic congestion and an increase in vehicle accidents. Additional flight delays, diversions, and cancellations could occur at airports during periods of severe dust storm activity. Ground transport disruptions are typically severe during rush hour periods. Higher-than-normal employee absenteeism is possible in the event of widespread transport disruptions.

Hazardous conditions may prompt school or business closures. Dust storms can also pose a health risk to individuals with pulmonary or respiratory issues, and authorities usually warn persons at high risk to remain indoors with windows closed during dust storms. Residual business and transport disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve.

Advice

Monitor local media for updates and related weather advisories. Exercise caution while driving and allow additional time to reach destinations. Confirm flights before checking out of hotels or returning rental cars. Plan for possible delivery delays. If operating in areas affected by dust storm activity, consider remaining indoors when possible. Individuals who must be outdoors should use facemasks and observe other precautions to avoid dust inhalation.
