Armenia: Thousands of protesters gather in Yerevan to call for resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan overnight Sept. 14-15
Thousands gather in Yerevan, Armenia, to demand resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan overnight Sept. 14-15; ceasefire deal reached.
Event
Thousands of protesters have gathered in Yerevan overnight Sept. 14-15 to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Demonstrators have assembled in front of the National Assembly building on Marshal Baghramyan Avenue and at Republic Square. Security forces have deployed to monitor the protest activity. The protests come after Pashinyan reportedly intimated his willingness to offer territorial concessions to Azerbaijan the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region as part of a future peace treaty; Armenian officials have since reported that Yerevan and Baku have reached a ceasefire agreement to end border clashes that have killed at least 155 troops from both sides in recent days.
Disruptions to transport and business are likely in protest-affected parts of Yerevan; protest activity may extend to heretofore unaffected areas over the coming hours. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Similar demonstrations are possible in Yerevan over the coming days.
Advice
Avoid protest-affected areas until the situation stabilizes. If violence breaks out, immediately leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
