Bangladesh: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to protest nationwide Sept. 18

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to protest across country Sept. 18. Increased security likely; clashes, transport disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will stage nationwide protests Sept. 18 to denounce recent clashes between police and protesters and the Awami League (AL) party's ongoing rule. As part of the rallies, activists plan to gather outside of BNP headquarters in Dhaka's Naya Paltan area beginning 14:30.

While organizers have not announced additional specific details, typical protest venues include district headquarters, government buildings, public squares, and press clubs. The largest gatherings are probable in major cities and towns, where thousands of activists could congregate.

Authorities will likely monitor the protests and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police, as well as counterdemonstrators, are possible. Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter at a secure, nongovernmental building. Plan for possible localized disruptions and allow additional travel time near sites where demonstrations materialize. Heed all official travel and security advisories.
