Clashes between supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Awami League (AL) have been reported in Dhaka’s Mirpur area afternoon of Sept. 15. Local media sources indicate AL supporters attacked a BNP rally denouncing rising fuel prices in Mirpur's Section 6. Fighting between the two groups broke out, with clashes also being reported in Section 2. Police fired tear gas to disperse the violent crowds. Several people have been injured.
Authorities will likely maintain heightened security in the area in the coming hours. Officials will probably close roadways where clashes have occurred or may occur, causing localized transport disruptions. Additional violence between rival groups may also break out through Sept. 15.
